DIY power cables is very easy. Second hand prices can hold quite well if you pick popular cables such as Acrolink, Sommer, WireWorld, AET, etc. All you need to do is to fix plugs of your choice (for example, Wattgate, Furutech, Oyaide, etc). But DIY is not cheap at all if you use good materials. Just my 2cents 
Not all cables that I use are DIY cables. For example, I do use factory made interconnects from CDP to Preamp and also Preamp to Power amp. For power amp, I use factory made power cord. 
For ground box, I am using Entreq Silver MiniMus with factory made silver cable with very impressive results. When I have time, I will follow some c-hings' schematic to DIY a ground box to try try
