I am aware different people have different emotional reaction to different recordings.
My own:
Beethoven 9: George Szell and Cleveland; Karajan and Berlin Phil
Carmina: Previn and London Symphony. But I like Kathleen Battle (soprano) best, on LD (not LP). The Telarc LP, I also have the CD and I took both to the Magico showroom for comparison last year.
The complex and loud passages in both works are useful tests for evaluating audio systems. Shouldn't have distortion, tearing or uncomfortable sound even when the volume is turned up louder than usual. |
