How to set Foobar correctly to play DSD128, DSD256 and DSD512

I have owned a Singxer SU-1 DDC to work with The Holo Spring through I2S cable. In operation, I use a pc with Win10 installed and the OS for playing music is Foobar. Unfortunately, I only got DSD64 workable in the set-up. Playing DSD files with DSD128 and DSD256 couldn't be achieved. Only a line of dots displayed on the display panel of the Holo Spring. I know it may be the improper setting of Foobar to make this happened. Has any brother here the experience to make DSD128 and above workable through Foobar? Please share your experience and comments. Thanks

Verify that firmware version 2.20 (NOT 2.22) for Singxer SU-1 is indeed up and running, hopefully you didn't fry your SU-1 or something.

Thank you very much for your precious information. I will try to install DSDTranscoderInstall-1.0.9 to play native dsd to see any improvement. Are you also the Holo Spring user? It seems you are very familiar with Holo Spring.

Well, actually I just read quite a bit about Singxer SU-1 because of so many different ways to mod the parts by replacing them with much better ones. Just learning how to improve the 1st generation while waiting for the 2nd one.

Matrix X-SPDIF 2 even came with both 45.1584MHz and 49.152MHz clocks, we could go nuts and replace them with NDK DuCULoN if we want but that would be way overkill.

I tried to install the DSD Transcoder (DOP/Native) this morning but couldn't open the control panel by double clicking of it. Though I have selected it as the output device, it couldn't be activated to work when I played any music files with error message (unrecoverable playback error: could not open the driver)

One interesting condition is that when I selected the SACD output mode to DSD only, it could play all DSD files with the correct bit rate shown on the display panel of the Holo Spring but no any sound was produced for DSD files  (actually the music was playing with the operation cursor moving slowly.)  

But if I selected the SACD output mode to DSD+PCM, it could only play DSD files to DSD64 with correct bit rate showing on the dispaly. All DSD files for DSD128 and upward couldn't be played with a line of dots on the dispaly only.


So, if the sound output for DSD output mode could be achieved, the problem would be solved accordingly

No worries, one step at a time and here we go:

Step #1 = Download the firmware version 2.20 for Singxer SU-1 and install it if that weren't done yet.

Once you install it, go to your Program Files on your hard drive, and look for the XMOS folder.  In that folder go to the folder USBAudioStDriver_3086.  From that folder run the exe "xmosusbaudiost3086_dfuapp.exe".  Once you run that, the application will ask you for the location of the firmware upgrade file.  That is the file Tim sent you.  Save that somewhere on your PC and select that.

Make sure that firmware version 2.20 (*NOT* 2.22) is indeed up and running before we proceed.

Step #3 = Uninstall the USB driver for Singxer SU-1 and reboot Windows.

I received similar instructions to get my SU-1 to drive native DSD512 over I2S into my Holo Audio Spring DAC: uninstall the SU-1 USB driver and install the Spring DAC USB driver and use it with the SU-1.  The Spring's USB driver will install for the SU-1.

Step #4 = Download and install the USB driver for Holo Spring.

Once you've rebooted Windows, download the official USB drivers for Holo Spring:

Install the USB driver that's applicable for your Windows version and then reboot once more.

The new firmware of Singxer SU-1 ver2.2 was upgraded by Jo two weeks ago. I installed its USB driver and Foobar on wind10 and set the foobar plugins according to the Singxer SU-1 Manual. But no way, playing DSD 64 and all PCM files are OK except DSD128 and above with the SACD output mode set to DSD+PCM. Setting the SACD output mode to DSD would have all PCM and DSD files including DSD64, DSD128 and DSD256 readable but there is no sound output at all. As I don't have any DSD512 file, I couldn't test its availability. Now I only use the Raspberry + RuneAudio to play DSD128 and DSD256.

Having read the links you provided, I tried to install the Holo Spring Driver onto my PC and selected it as the output device. The Singxer SU-1 did work with the Holo Spring USB driver as its own but the case is just the same that it couldn't play DSD 128 and above.

The case almost made me mad for playing DSD 128 and DSD 256 files. I tested it in AES connection this afternoon. Of course, the answer is uncessessful. But, the miracle happened when I swithched it back to I2S connection. Everything was OK with DSD files excluding DSD512 cause I don't have any DSD512 format. That occurance made me very excited and happy as I were freely released from annoyance. Though so many DSD128 and DSD256 files were successfully played, I have a DSD128 album named Adele 25 which was found failed on playing just like before. I don't know the reason why? I am afraid the case will be back to failure once I removed the AES cable from the connection between the Singxer and the Holo Spring DAC! I wonder whether the connection of AES in the system will bring any circuit relationship for I2S connection on play back?

Yes, I emailed to Leter (Mr. Chen) days ago. Leter said it might be the firmware of the Holo Spring is too old for DSD128 and DSD256 and recommended me to ask for help from Jeff of Holo to send me the latest version of firmware for my upgrade. Though I have sent emial to Jeff asking about the queries on the Holo Spring, he just occasionally gave me one or seldomly two of the reply. I think Jeff of Holo is not as active as Leter of Singxer in case of customer care. I have illustrated the happening occurred this afternoon to Leter of Singxer through e-mail asking for his professional analysis and waiting for his reply.

Finally, I could play DSD512 fluently not through Foobar but JRiver instead. The sonic quality of JRiver is better than the free ware - Foobar.

Think the situation relates to individual playback software and settings.
My SU-1 and Holo are with original firmware as acquired in Dec 2016.  There is no problem playing DSD256 in NOS mode using JPlay, with either AES or I2S connections.  My system is Win 10, fully loaded into ram during computer booting.
What is the version of jRiver that you succeed to run DSD512 ?

To my understanding, only I2S connection of the DAC could handle DSD128 and upwards. Connections through coaxial or AES can only manage DSD64 only. So, for DSD128 to DSD512 or even DSD1024 must use I2S cable connect to have the job done. My JRiver is  JRiver Media Center 20.0.52
