'The Bourne Legacy' Review Round-Up
Is 'The Bourne Legacy' worth a trip to the theater? According to top critics: only if you don't mind being pretty darn confused!
The latest sequel-reboot-companion to the Bourne trilogy stars Jeremy Renner as a genetically enhanced super-spy whose life is complicated by the events of the previous films when the CIA decides to terminate his program -- and when I say "his program," I mean "his life." Along the way he picks up medical researcher who knows too much Rachel Weisz, and together they try to not get assassinated by evil baddie Edward Norton. With an original story penned by Tony Gilroy, the guy who adapted the first trilogy and who also took over the director's chair for 'The Bourne Legacy,' this is the first Bourne movie to depart from the Robert Ludlum series of novels.
No consensus yet on Rotten Tomatoes, but so far the film has mixed reviews, with a certified-barely-fresh rating of 61%. That's a far cry from 'Identity,' 'Supremacy,' and 'Ultimatum,' which all scored in the 80s and 90s. So what's the rub? Well, Roger Ebert called the plot a "murky muddle" and admitted that "for at least the first 30 minutes I had no clear idea of why anything was happening." Glenn Kenny of MSN Movies blames the director, saying "Gilroy's idea of fun is to throw the viewer into the middle of his story's bizarre, unusual circumstances and let them wallow in the simultaneous exhilaration and frustration of not having a handle on things." On the flip side, Kenny and others praise the performances, action, and suspense, including a thrilling motorcycle chase at the movie's conclusion. The Chicago Tribune's Michael Phillips sums it all up when he re-dubs the movie "The Pointless, Confused and Then, For the Last Half-Hour, Exciting Bourne Sequel, After a Fashion." Very catchy, but I don't know if it'll fit on a DVD cover.
So have the critics swayed you either way when it comes to 'The Bourne Legacy'? I'm still in, but what about you? Let us know your plans and be sure to give your own review when and if you do see it, because you are our favorite critics. I'm Vivian Fabiola, thanks for tuning in to ClevverMovies! |
