Skype To Replace Messenger

Microsoft will shut down Windows Live Messenger next year, compelling users to migrate to Skype, whose latest version can import users' Messenger contacts.

By updating to the latest Skype, Messenger users can instant message and video call their Messenger friends. Messenger users just need to update to the latest version of Skype, sign in using a Microsoft account, and their Messenger contacts will be there.

"We want to focus our efforts on making things simpler for our users while continuously improving the overall experience," Skype said.

Skype will retire Messenger in all countries worldwide in the first quarter of 2013 (with the exception of mainland China where Messenger will continue to be available).

Some of the other features Messenger users can expect:

- Broader device support for all platforms, including iPad and Android tablets
- Instant messaging, video calling, and calling landlines and mobiles all in one place
- Sharing screens
- Video calling on mobile phones
- Video calling with Facebook friends
- Group video calling

Microsoft acquired Skype in October 2011 for US$8.5 billion.

MSN小命不保？　傳微軟有意扶正Skype！

就在使用者仍在適應 Windows 8 的時候，大家熟知的 Windows Live Messenger，也就是大家慣稱的 MSN，卻可能要面臨退休的命運？現有傳聞指出，微軟最快可能會在數個月內停止這項服務，並以網路通訊軟體 Skype 作為接替者。而正式官方消息最快可能在本週內就會公布？

微軟目前尚未針對這項傳聞進行回應，但近年在 Skype 使用量穩定成長，再加上今年 10 月更新的 Skype 6.0 版除支援 Windows Live、Outlook.com、Hotmail 以及 Facebook 帳號登入，對應 Windows 8 系統，另釋出 Skype for Windows 8 專司適用 Windows 8 Style UI；但 Windows Live Messenger 2012 版卻遲遲沒有明顯動作，也難怪微軟可能會讓 Skype 取代 Windows Live Messenger 的小道消息不斷。

自 2003 年成立的 Skype 在 2005 年間，被 eBay 以 27.5 億美元收購後，2009 年轉手給投資集團 Sliver Lake，又在 2011 年 5 月被微軟以 85 億美元買下。這項交易當時作為微軟近 36 年來最大收購案而轟動一時。2011 年完成交易時，微軟曾強調，Skype 會在不改變現有結構的前提下，持續提供服務，並與微軟合作積極擴大市場。
