Sony to reduce X9 prices, debut cheaper 4K TVs

Sony will reportedly slash prices of its two 65 and 55” X9 4K TVs by $1500 and $1000, respectively. Sony also plans to introduce two lower cost versions without the side-mounted speakers.
Currently, the 65” 65X900A is available for $6999 and the 55” 55X900A for $4999. The coming price reduction will lower prices to $5499 and $3999, respectively. A significant price drop, indeed, but still far from mass-market appeal.
New cheaper 4K TVs sans side speakers
According to the report, Sony is also planning to release two new 4K TVs. The TVs will technically be identical to the current X9 series but Sony has opted to remove the magnetic fluid side speakers.
The new 4K TVs from Sony will launch later this month, coinciding with the IFA 2013 show that kicks off in early September. They will be sold for $4999 for a 65” version and $3499 for a 55” version.
With Sony being increasingly aggressive on 4K pricing it will be interesting to see how Samsung and LG respond. Both manufacturers have also recently introduced 4K TVs in select markets.
