Pure speculation:
Given the massive heatsink for 12V/1A max, this is probably a shunt regulator. A shunt regulator will burn all the power as heat under no load, pretty much like a class A amp, so including the dropout voltage it'll dissipate more than 15W constantly.
The output port has 4 pins, so it's probably using a 4 wire scheme with 2 wires for voltage sensing, improving further the load regulation and lowering the output impedance further.
It will be an overkill to use a shunt regulator for CAS, which typically involve high current, and a (relatively) more effective series regulator would be sufficient for the job.
Ideal application for shunt regulators are typically below a few hundred mA, like buffers, line stage, pre-Amp, DAC, ... etc. |
