This is comparing apple to orange, if not qualified on the conditions in the comparison well.
NAS, or network-attached server/storage in full, for the sake of its name, is a network device. For most of the off-the-shelf NAS such as those from Synology and QNAP, their USB ports are auxiliary ports for connection to, for example, USB flash memory sticks, external storage devices, printers etc, for short stints, or just for external storage for additional space. The off-the-shelf hardware and software packages of NAS are not really intended and optimized for quality USB audio playback. You can find much better ways to enhance the playback quality of off-the-shelf NAS in network streaming.
Network streaming is more a "pull", the streamer asks the NAS/other device in the network to serve and release the audio data. The hardware and software of the streamer are more important than the media server in NAS (though still can make a difference with different media servers in the NAS). USB audio playback is more a "push", the host computer directly pushes audio data to the DAC for decoding, and hence the configuration of the host computer has more dominant effect to the playback quality. |
