Battery supply is facing at least 2 challenges:
1) Quality Battery system is expensive for high powered devices - Take the Jeff Rowland 8T as an example, their DC power supply costs about 40% the price of the main unit that last a few hours of operation in Class AB mode. For power amps, stable output voltage and high current capability does matter. With the ultra high powered flagship amplifiers today, battery supply seems not making sense.
2) For small powered devices, still ultra low output impedence with minimal ripples (noises) are instrumental for sound performances. That is why major brands such as Nagra, Naim adopting HI-CAP PSU instead of battery. In fact, the HI-CAP PSU of J Rowland Corus Pre-amp is proven to outperform its predecessor Criterion in terms of transparency and transient presentation. |
