故事的背景是第二次世界大戰, 福特飾演印第安那瓊斯, 世界上最出名的考古學家, 平時在大學裡是穿西裝打領帶的斯文教授, 一但穿上皮夾克, 拿起鞭子, 就成了最大膽的冒險家. 這一次的歷險是尋找傳說中摩西的十誡. 據說十誡擁有強大的力量, 可瞬間殺人於無形, 因此希特勒也積極尋找. 為了不讓埋藏已久的聖物落入納粹之手, 印第必須要搶先一步行動...
這是印第安那瓊斯冒險的第一部, 賣座成績及評語都非常好, 本來印第的角色是屬意湯姆謝立克來飾演, 但因為湯姆謝立克當時在拍影集"夏威夷之虎", 無法抽空, 只好作罷. 史蒂芬史匹柏和喬治盧卡斯馬上想到了福特, 也因此造就了福特最受人喜愛的形象.
