NAD's 'best ever' CD player £1200 NAD S500i CD player has been designed for audiophile quality as well as style
NAD claims its new £1200 CD player, the S500i, is its best ever. The company says that its analogue stages are biased for pure Class A operation from input to output; for perfect low frequency behaviour the player is true DC coupled. The circuit topology is said to be stable under all operating conditions, but DC servo circuitry is retained to deal with the large number of discs which give inherent DC offset due to errors during the mastering process.
A custom toroidal transformer, partnered with audiophile capacitors, is used to minimise radiation. Power for the digital and analogue sections comes from separate secondary windings on the transformer; each section — digital, logic, servo and amp — has its own regulation to reduce noise, hum and interference. 24-bit Crystal digital-to-analogue conversion was chosen for its low-level linearity, low distortion and low noise, and the 384x oversampling digital filter was designed specially for the player. The transport uses a brushless motor to minimise jitter. A three-beam laser ensures accurate tracking even of damaged discs, and it enables the player to handle CD-R and CD-RW discs.
The player has balanced XLR outputs as well as the standard RCA phonos, and there's an AES/EBU digital output beside the conventional electrical feed. Remote control completes the package.
