I have listened to the LS50 (not the current wireless). No doubt it's price/performance is high. As to sound my opinion is: good midrange (voice and violin) with focussed and small image (surely that is so because of the co-incident speaker driver). Bass and highs are acceptable for a speaker of this size. One may add a subwoofer and how to do it--consult member Siuping in this forum who has done it very well. Soundstage width and depth--acceptable but I was using LP at the time, hence hard to conclude definitively. If I was using my digital tracks and DAC, I would have known better. Bass and soundstage performances depend very much on the quality of the tracks and the DAC. AV setups and disks in my view are meant to create effect and sensation thus not for conventional audio listening.
The main question to a potential buyer who already owns a CD player and amp, and wants to upgrade, is whether he should buy a LS50 adding perhaps a DAC and/or subwoofer,
OR should get rid of all the existing stuff and go for the new wireless version. The wireless has apparently the same speaker driver as the LS50 but the cabinet design is totally different inside. It does not necessarily follow newer is better in terms of sonic performance.
Does the KEF showroom provide facility for the potential buyer to have a meaningful comparison between the LS50 and the wireless version? Reviews supported by advertisements do not say anything bad about any product. The potential buyer must listen for himself to determine his likes and dislikes. |
