Confidence in buying 2nd hand AV gears

Buying new AV gears might be expnesive, so buying 2nd hand gears is an option, but sometimes it might be tricky as you don't really know the condition of it. This is to solicitor comment and share experience. Enjoy.

For option 3, better sub divided into
a) Known member (from here or other forums)
b) Unknown member - Any member, new and old
c) Unknown member joined  > 1 month
d) Unknown member joined > 3 months

Maybe buying from unknown member, whatever their membership tenor, is equivalent to option 5. And from known members is equivalent to from friends.

Long time ago, I have a friend who is very familar with the owner/partner of a 2nd hand hifi shop Sxx Wxx. Based on that relationship, I bought and sold 2nd hand hifi gears frequently. Now my poisonous friend has emigrated to Canda and my fever for hifi has fade away. Change to AV, more direct punch and exciting. bought 2nd hand av gears nowadys mainly from forum members  - sort of more reilable and can ask, test more throughly and even bargain price than in 2nd hand shop. And make new friends with common interest to blow water. (Sort of over-active lately hence wife is complaining)

Is it normal practice/do you accept when buying a sub from a 2nd hand shop, only generate test tone to confirm the sub is good and you have to pay for it?
