Make an old NAS quiet

On the verge of getting a new NAS and spending even more on this money burning hobby of ours, as my old trusted Netgear ReadyNAS DUO is just too damn noisy sitting in the listening area, I googled the net and found out a large number of users actually have the same problem and made simple ‘upgrade’, i.e., replacing the factory fan with higher quality ‘silent’ fan.

Finally I got one from eBay since too lazy to visit malls in SSP or MK, replaced it last night.  Wow, really night and day in terms of noise fan.  I brought the NAS into the living room to test before fan replacement and could not live with the noise even 10 feet away when listening.  Now with the fan replaced, I am happy to share with you that it is practically inaudible from the same distance, and most importantly the temperature of the drives and fan speed remain constant as before fan replacement.

This simple exercise has 2 benefits:

1.        Save money, $200 versus possible $4,000 plus
2.        Can continue to use newer version of LMS with ease

Now I am not talking about the NAS sounding better, but from a practical point of view it’s so easy to accomplish, cheers.

This is a post for people who want to DIY a fanless NAS at low cost. Same as all other DIY, there is risk. Decide before you start.

Pre-requisites:
1. A fanless PC motherboard. e.g. Atom / AMD E1-2100
2. A hard disk, e.g. 2T
3. RAM, 1G or above
4. A PC chassis, prefer aluminium chassis with good heat dissipation.
5. A USB flash drive with 1G or above


Steps:
1. Assemble the PC
2. Load the USB flash from this: http://www.xpenology.nl/hardware-installatie/
(Remember to read the DISCLAIMER first!)
3. Put the USB key to the PC, select boot from USB in the BIOS setting page of the PC
4. Power on the PC, follow the setup video / text steps in web site in step 2 to complete setup.

thanks for sharing, I am not so picky to the point of building one myself, so I'll make do with the old clunk I have for now
